Kew's necklace orchids are showing off their sparkly curtains in the Princess of Wales conservatory at Kew Gardens.

After some tender care from Bala Kompalli in the Lower Nursery, two splendid examples of a necklace orchid, Coelogyne dayana, are on display in the Princess of Wales conservatory at Kew Gardens.Their gorgeous inflorescences are hanging down like sparkly curtains.

 

Native to Borneo, Java, Sumatra and Malaysia the stunning flowers don’t last long but are spectacular to see. It was named after John Day, the prominent orchid collector and botanical artist, but it is also known as Coelogyne pulverula.

 

Kew's larger specimen is forty five years old, and this year has produced numerous spikes in succession, ensuring a flower display of several weeks.
